World Down Syndrome Day: Promoting Inclusion, Rights, and Support for Individuals with Down Syndrome

‘The World Down Syndrome Day’ is observed annually on March 21st. It aims at raising public awareness and advocating for the rights, inclusion and well-being of the people with Down Syndrome.

Down Syndrome is a genetic condition that affects individuals in unique ways. It is caused by an extra copy of Chromosome-21 also knows as Trisomy-21.

Certain health conditions which include heart conditions, hearing loss or vision issues can be associated with this syndrome.

However, the adults with Down Syndrome live an independent, fulfilling lives, work and participate in communities when provided with the required support.

Each year ‘The World Down Syndrome Day’ is celebrated with an associated theme, it includes:

  1. ‘’End the Stereotypes’’
  2. ‘’Leave No One Behind’’
  3. ‘’With Us, Not For Us’’

This year the theme ‘’Improve Our Support Systems’’ aims at strengthening inclusive support systems to secure that individuals with Down Syndrome receive care, education and opportunities they deserve.
