DPS Srinagar organized a Cancer Awareness Talk on Lifestyle Management, conducted by renowned oncologist Dr. Shabnum Bashir, took place at the DPS Srinagar Senior Auditorium on Thursday, 17th August. The event was a part of school’s initiative for well-being of its staff and aimed to educate the staff about cancer prevention, early detection, and the role of lifestyle choices in reducing cancer risks.

Dr Shabnam Bashir is a Senior Consultant in Breast, Colorectal and Peritoneal Surface Malignancies. She completed her medical degree 21 years back and has a rich experience of 17 years & then Onco-Surgery. She was trained in Breast and Colorectal cancer surgeries from Tata Memorial hospital (Mumbai), and Advanced Robotic Surgeries from Rosewell Park Cancer Institute, USA.

Dr Shabnam was instrumental in starting the Pink of Health Series in women at Apollo Hospital BGR and has been the Co-founder of the Colorectal Division at Apollo Hospitals, Bangalore. She is also Core Founder Member of Rectal cancer Treatment Group. She designed the new structure of Apollo Shine Programme for Children in 2018. She was conferred the honorary adjunct title of Associate Professor by the Board of Governors of The  Apollo Hospitals Educational & Research Foundation – Oct 2018 

Dr. Shabnum, is known for her expertise in cancer management, kicked off the event with an insightful introduction. Her credentials and experience in the field lent credibility to the information shared. She began by explaining the basics of cancer, including its causes, types, and prevalence. She used simple language to ensure that the audience could comprehend the complex concepts.

The central focus of the talk was the relationship between lifestyle choices and cancer risk. Dr. Shabnum emphasized how factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diets, lack of physical activity, and excessive sun exposure can increase the likelihood of developing cancer.

The oncologist provided practical tips for cancer prevention through lifestyle modifications. She discussed the importance of maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, as well as the need to engage in regular physical activity. Dr. Shabnum also stressed the significance of avoiding tobacco and cigarette consumption.

Another crucial aspect covered was the significance of early cancer detection. Dr. Shabnum elaborated on the importance of regular screenings and self-examinations for various types of cancers, which can significantly improve survival rates.
