DPS Srinagar Hosts Interschool Debate on Morality as a Social Construct, Championing Critical Thinking and Articulate Expression

Delhi Public School, Srinagar reaffirmed its commitment to academic excellence by hosting the prestigious interschool Debate competition held at the school premises on 10 October,2024. This event was organized with the objectives of enhancing the significance of critical thinking and eloquence in our education system and providing a platform for students to explore the relevance and implications of morality in today’s rapidly evolving society.

The schools that participated in this intense intellectual exchange included, Presentation Convent, Burn Hall, SRM Welkin, Delhi Public School Budgam, Birla Open Minds, Green Valley, Tyndale Biscoe, Kashmir Harvard, Mallinson Girls High School, Dolphin International School  Kashmir Valley and the host school, Delhi Public School, Srinagar.

The motion for this year’s debate competition was “Morality is a Regressive Social Construct.” This challenging theme pushed the debaters to analyze historical, cultural, and philosophical perspectives, making for an enlightening debate. It served as a platform for students to express their perspectives and engage in meaningful discussions on this pertinent topic.

There were two rounds of debate and participants had the opportunity to present their arguments in their main speech, spanning three minutes and then engage in rebuttals. The distinguished judges, Professor Nighat Aziz and Professor Farooq Ahmad, evaluated the participants based on their content, delivery, confidence, intonation, and ability to challenge opposing viewpoints. Several participants displayed exceptional skills in articulation, making the competition both rigorous and intellectually stimulating. The debates featured thought-provoking arguments, well-researched content, and immaculate delivery.

After several rounds of compelling arguments and rebuttals, Delhi Public school, Srinagar emerged as the winner, impressing the judges with their in-depth analysis and articulate delivery. Burnhall School took the Runners’ Up, showcasing commendable debating skills. The title of the best speaker was awarded to Khan Asmat from Birla Open Minds for her excellent performance.

This event not only fostered healthy competition but also provided a platform for young minds to critically engage with complex societal issues, reflecting the school’s commitment to nurturing intellectual growth and encouraging thoughtful discourse.
