DPS Srinagar organises Awareness Programme on “Substance Abuse: Consequences, Prevention and Challenges’

Delhi Public School, Srinagar, in collaboration with the J&K Legal Services Authority, organized an impactful awareness programme on the topic “Substance Abuse: Consequences, Prevention, and Challenges.” The event brought together esteemed dignitaries, experts, and passionate students.

Justice Tashi Rabstan, Senior-most Judge of the High Court of J&K and Ladakh and Executive Chairman of the J&K Legal Services Authority, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He was warmly received by Mr. Vijay Dhar, Chairman of DPS Srinagar; Ms. Shafaq Afshan, Principal of DPS Srinagar; Dr. Arshid Hussain, Professor of Psychiatry at GMC Srinagar; Dr. Majid Shafi, Psychiatrist at JLNM Hospital Srinagar; and Jahangir Ahmad Bakshi, Secretary of DLSA Srinagar.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty members, administrative staff of DPS Srinagar, advocates, law students, staff of the J&K Legal Services Authority, DLSA Srinagar, and para-legal volunteers (PLVs). In his opening address, Mr. Vijay Dhar extended a warm welcome to the Chief Guest and expressed gratitude to Justice Tashi Rabstan for choosing DPS Srinagar to discuss the critical issue of substance abuse. He emphasized the importance of such programmes in raising awareness and guiding children toward positive social change.

In his Presidential address, Justice Tashi highlighted the urgent need to raise awareness about the ill effects of substance abuse, particularly among teachers, urging them to extend a helping hand in eradicating this menace from society.

Eminent resource persons, Dr. Arshid Hussain and Dr. Majid Shafi, provided detailed insights into the causes behind the increase in substance abuse, especially in the valley. They revealed alarming data showing that the Kashmir Valley has surpassed Punjab in terms of youth involvement in drug abuse.

The programme was further enriched by a compelling skit performed by law students and advocates, illustrating the detrimental effects of substance abuse.

Mr. Jahangir Ahmad Bakshi proposed a formal vote of thanks, expressing his gratitude to the management of DPS Srinagar for organizing an awareness programme on such an important issue.

The event concluded on a high note, with a commitment to continued education, inspiring action, and nurturing a healthier, safer community on the path toward a substance-free society.
