Educational Visit to Panthachowk Police Station
As part of the practical curriculum for Legal Studies, a group of 18 students from Class 12 embarked on an educational visit to the Panthachowk Police Station on Monday, 6th October 2025. Accompanied by their teacher, Ms. Sumaira Bawan, the visit commenced at 10:30 AM with the key objective of providing students with direct exposure to the functioning of the police system and observing how theoretical concepts of law are applied in real-world scenarios. Upon arrival, the students were cordially welcomed by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), the Station House Officer (SHO), and other police personnel. The officers provided an introduction to the station’s administrative and functional setup, followed by a unique interactive opportunity for students to sit in the SHO’s chair. This gesture was designed to impart a tangible sense of the authority and significant responsibility vested in the officer in charge of a station.
The visit offered a direct window into daily operations. Students had the valuable opportunity to witness the live handling of a complaint filed by a person who had lost his passport. They observed the entire process as officers recorded, verified, and processed the complaint in accordance with the legal procedure. This practical demonstration was followed by a detailed briefing on key processes, including the method for filing a First Information Report (FIR), the important concept of a Zero FIR, and the step-by-step stages of an investigation.
A significant portion of the session was dedicated to acquainting the students with the new criminal law framework. The SDPO and SHO explained the key provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), emphasising the reforms introduced to enhance efficiency and justice. This focus on modern policing was further underscored by a tour of the station’s HD CCTV system. Officers explained that the system features audio detection and securely stores all footage for up to six years, ensuring transparency and accountability.
The comprehensive tour included a viewing of the police lock-up area, which was accompanied by a professional briefing on the procedures followed during detention and the fundamental rights of the accused. The officers also elaborated on the station’s internal hierarchy, clarifying the distinct roles from constables to the SDPO, and explained the jurisdictional limits of the police station in handling cases.
The visit concluded with two highly engaging sessions. First, officers conducted a demonstration of their personal weapons, after safely removing all live cartridges, to emphasise firearm safety and the discipline required in operations. This was followed by an inspiring session on the gallantry awards and honours bestowed upon police personnel for acts of bravery, complete with motivational stories from the field that highlighted the courage and dedication inherent in the profession.
In conclusion, the educational visit to the Panthachowk Police Station was a highly informative and interactive experience. It successfully bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, providing the Legal Studies students with invaluable real-world insight into the criminal justice system and a profound appreciation for the ethics and commitment of the police force.
