An orientation programme for the parents of LKG, admitted for the academic session 2018, was held today 15th March, 2018, in the AV Room of DPS, Srinagar. Ms. Radifa Khan, Incharge of Tiny Tots wing, started the programme with a welcome speech and a brief introduction of the School. She briefed the parents about Early Childhood Education Programme and Socio-psychological aspects, laying stress on developing a positive self-concept.

 The Principal, Mr Balasubramaniam Murali, then delivered a brief speech welcoming the parents. He also called for more involvement and timely feedback from the parents so that the learning process is improved upon.

A presentation of Ms. Fozia Qadir, the Academic Incharge of LKG followed. She talked about importance of extra-curricular activities, good personal hygiene, self-confidence, physical and motor skills, thus slowly moving towards writing readiness in young learners.

She provided an insight into different teaching methodologies adopted in teaching various subjects (LEARNING BY DOING) in the classrooms e.g. storytelling, puppet shows and action stories to gear up enthusiasm in our students. She talked about the various co-scholastic areas like overnight Camps held at the school. She demonstrated how mathematical concepts are taught in a realistic manner moving from concrete to symbolic presentation using different tools like number string, dice, etc. She talked about the practical ways of teaching Environmental Science, the visit to the farmhouse by the Tiny Tots kids, making them aware of planting the saplings and harvesting the crop.

Ms. Fozia’s presentation was followed by the presentation of Ms. Munaza Mohi-ud-Din, Incharge of Special Education Needs Department. The session highlighted the need for identification of the special needs of children. She discussed the learning disabilities among children and the strategies to cope with them.

This was followed by a brief session by Mr. Shahid Saleem Shah, the IT member. He briefed the parents about the Campus Manager, how to interact with the teachers, how to seek appointments, and how to pay online fees.

In the end, a session with Ms. Nadia Ishfaq Nahvi, the Counsellor for Tiny Tots wing, was conducted. She asked the parents to maintain a balance between pampering and positive parenting. She highlighted how pampering can affect the behaviour of the child. She further explained the need to watch the content which the children are watching nowadays on mobile phones, to check the language used in cartoons. She highlighted the importance of spending quality time with the child and how the behaviour and language in our family can impact in developing, changing and influencing the young minds.

The Orientation programme was concluded by an interaction between parents and teachers. The queries raised by parents were duly answered by the academic heads.
