DPS Srinagar emerges runner up in 2nd Delhi Challenge Cricket cup
DPS Srinagar emerged as the runner up in the 2nd Delhi Challenge Cricket Cup held at Ashok Vihar Delhi from 23rd to 27th December 2019. It lost a closely fought final to Madhya Pradesh on the penultimate ball of the match by four wickets. The tournament was held between the winners of zonal championship already held previously in Autumn. DPS Srinagar had upset all calculations by its dazzling strokeplay and incisive bowling, and piped all teams to emerge as zonal victor. Schools from Delhi -the host, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Mumbai had won in their respective zones to qualify for this round.
The finals capped a brilliant tournament in which the team shocked stronger teams like Mumbai and Delhi to sail into the final. The highlight of the tournament was a breezy ton by Wasalat Bashir against Andhra Pradesh. His crisp stroke play and technical finesse won him many admirers as he notched up 122 runs while establishing a 222 run opening partnership. It was only bettered by Basit who scored 229 runs in the tournament, and was awarded the best batsman award of the tournament. The team also played a practice match against a team formed from U-19 Ranji players – Mayak Dogral, Akash Roy, Rajesh Our student played brilliant cricket as Taif Altaf and Nabeel Qari stitched a quick-fire partnership of 34 runs from 14 balls.
Commending the team, the Principal Alistair R A Freese said “I congratulate the team for their performance. Their never say die attitude inspires me, as it does others who watched them.” The Chairman Vijay Dhar too lauded the team and said “To accomplish so much in the face of adversity proves that the values we inculcate at our school have hatched successfully. More than the results I congratulate the team for its perseverance and courage.”
